Prenatal Care Q & A

What can a woman do to help ensure a healthy pregnancy?

During pregnancy, maintaining a normal schedule of prenatal appointments and following the advice Dr. Gadh provides is essential to ensuring a healthy baby and delivery. Prenatal care helps screen for risks and problems while preparing the mother for delivery.

When should a woman schedule her first prenatal appointment?

Women can call the Advanced OBGYN Institute the moment they find out they're pregnant, but often Dr. Gadh will meet with women before they become pregnant to help them plan for pregnancy and prenatal care. Typically, routine prenatal visits start around the 10th week of pregnancy, but some women will visit earlier to confirm a healthy start to the pregnancy.

How often are prenatal care visits needed?

The frequency of the prenatal visits changes as the pregnancy progresses. In the early months, most women come just once a month. After 32 weeks, the Advanced OBGYN Institute will increase the number of visits to every 2 weeks. After the 37th week, visits are 1 time per week. Women with complications or high-risk pregnancies will need to come more frequently.

What is a typical prenatal appointment like?

When a patient comes to the Advanced OBGYN Institute for a prenatal appointment. Dr. Gadh will weigh her and measure the growth of the belly to ensure the baby's on track for growth. Urine testing is also part of each exam, and the doctor will check the baby's heartbeat at each exam. Checking for swelling is another important reason for these visits.

Prenatal appointments also give a mom a chance to ask questions about pregnancy and what they should or shouldn't be doing.

What prenatal tests are recommended?

Prenatal testing helps screen for complications and risks, including birth defects. Some common prenatal tests include:

  • Ultrasound
  • Gestational diabetes screening
  • Amniocentesis
  • Chorionic villus sampling
  • Maternal blood test

In most cases, these tests provide peace of mind that all is well, but in rare cases where complications do exist, they give the Advanced OBGYN Institute team and the parents a chance to prepare for a potentially complicated birth.

To ensure you’re prepared for all potential concerns of pregnancy, talk to the Advanced OBGYN Institute team about which tests the doctors recommend.
